Our Kissimmee rental looked great online - the reality was unsafe

We rent short term homes often. For this trip we asked in writing about mold and water issues before booking and were told there were none. What we found on arrival was different. We are publishing clear facts and photos so other travelers can make informed decisions.

We are not trying to defame anyone. This page shares a factual account and evidence to promote transparency and safety.

Before booking

We asked three specific questions:

  • Cats ever in the home
  • Any history of mold or water damage
  • Why no guest reviews

We were told in writing there had never been a mold incident and that regular moisture checks and HVAC service were performed. We relied on that statement when booking.

What we found after check in

The listing photos and promises did not match what we encountered. The home was dirty and showed clear signs of moisture problems. This matters for any traveler, and especially for families with health sensitivities.

Documented conditions

  • Visible mold and dark staining near HVAC returns and bathroom areas
  • Water damaged baseboards and bubbling paint
  • Slime and buildup in showers and tubs
  • Dirty dishes and worn linens on arrival

All items were photographed with dates. We share a selection below for public awareness.

Why this is serious

One of us is actively recovering from prior mold exposure. New exposure risks setbacks. Honesty about mold and water history is not optional - it is essential for health and safety.

When a property is represented in writing as never having a mold incident yet shows visible signs consistent with moisture damage, guests deserve to know. Transparency protects travelers and responsible hosts alike.

How we responded

We first requested a private resolution with a refund. When that was refused, we moved to formal channels to protect other travelers.

Formal steps

  • Complaints filed or prepared for VRBO, BBB, and Florida SunBiz
  • Regulatory complaints to DBPR and FREC for review under Chapter 475 and Rule 61J2-14.008
  • Notice to the host's brokerage for internal compliance review
  • Documentation shared with local investigative media for independent evaluation

We prefer private resolution when possible. When that fails, sunlight is the best disinfectant.

What we publish here

  • Exact pre booking questions and written answers
  • Selected photos with dates and captions
  • A plain language timeline

We share facts so that searchers looking for rentals or real estate in Orlando can make informed choices.
